NORAD orbital-decay-rate data on the HEOS-2 second-stage rocket (1972-05B) from 1973-1978 are analyzed at 712 epochs to determine the air-density variation. The data are normalized to three fixed heights, and the effects of solar and geomagnetic activity and diurnal variations are removed before investigating the semi-annual residual-air-density variation. The data and results are presented in tables and graphs. The mean 335-km density-index maxima are 1.22 on April 19 and 1.18 on November 12; the minima are 0.74 on January 14 and either 0.65 (1974-76) or 0.82 (1977-78) on July 26. The overall variation amplitude and (after mid-1977) the absolute values are found to be higher than those of model atmospheres.
