Plans are being made to upgrade the LHC luminosity above the nominal maximum of 1034cm-2s-1, eventually achieving an order of magnitude increase at the Super-LHC. This will require significant modifications to the CMS tracking detector. A new CMS tracking system is under design to allow the operation under these conditions with performance matching the present system and with improvements in some important areas, such as radiation hardness, channel density adaption to cope with the increased track density and triggering. The current status will be presented, with emphasis on some of the specific requirements proposed for CMS.
