The E x B instability is basically an interchange mode and can be excited in a weakly collisional, inhomogeneous, magnetized plasma containing a neutral wind or an ambient electric field orthogonal to the magnetic field. This instability is regarded as important in the structuring of ionospheric plasmas. An analytical expression is presented for the growth rate of the E x B instability in the long-wavelength limit, taking into account conditions for which the product of the wave number and the scale length of the density gradient are much less than one. Results are obtained for the case of a single discontinuity in plasma density.
