The basic theoretical principles of acoustooptical detection are reviewed and the Cologne acoustooptical spectrometer (AOS) is described in detail. The method used with this AOS to solve the problem of laser speckles is examined. Consideration is given to several versions of the Cologne AOS, including a 1.1 GHz bandwidth low resolution AOS and a medium resolution 287-MHz bandwidth AOS. Various AOS components are discussed and results are presented from applications of the AOS systems.
