The role of the current sheet of the heliosphere in the generation of geomagnetic disturbances is assessed. It is shown that sector boundaries of the IMF (or certain types of such boundaries) are one of the main causes of intense and very intense geomagnetic disturbances. A significant enhancement of large values of the Kp index indicates that the disturbance organized by the sector front is of short duration or has an oscillating character. The integral geomagnetic effect of the boundary may also be considerable.
