The new REX (Radar and Plasma Experiment) radar design will have a multi-purpose capability that makes it very suitable for high-grain/low-cost space missions. In addition to the ability of investigating the lunar plasma surroundings, the instrument's GPR (Ground Penetrating Radar) mode makes it possible to study subsurface geological structures down to several kilometers depth in the lunar crust. A special frequency mode will allow high-resolution altimetry mapping, and detection and analysis of the proposed lunar ice. This report describes a number of objects that should be the primary objectives for the GPR study. It does also provide geological inputs to facilitate the development of the method and interpretation of the expected data. The suggested objects are; the South Pole Crater where water-ice may by trapped, the Schrodinger Basin, one of the best preserved large impact basins on the Moon and with evidence for young volcanic activity, and the enormous Aitken Basin that may constitute a key-hole to the lunar upper mantle. With experience form the Moon it will be possible to apply the REX system to future missions to other objects in the solar system.
