The lecture describes solar flare effects in the chromosphere and photosphere, particularly emphasizing problems of energy transfer and the differences between thermal and nonthermal phases of flare development. Filamentary and shell models are compared, and the depth of the white-light flare emission is discussed. Optical effects possibly associated with other, nonoptical flare-associated phenomena are pointed out.
