This paper discusses the ionospheric signatures that would be associated with the patchy and random reconnection on the dayside magnetopause. Structured precipitations defining the cleft are suggested to represent the solar-wind plasma, which was loaded on these closed field lines in the recent past when they were temporarily open. The lobe cell of convection streamlines that has been suggested to exist during the southward IMF periods may be due to the random reconnection on the surface of the tail lobe.
