A general description is given of the atmospheric structure of Mars, Venus and earth. Experimental data on the upper atmospheres of Venus and Mars are summarized with attention given to Venera, Mariner, and Mars probe observations and considering such data as hydrogen profiles in the Venus atmosphere, electron density profiles in the Venus ionosphere, UV spectra of the Mars atmosphere, and the CO and CO2 bands of the Mars atmosphere. A system of equations is presented for the dynamics and structure of the upper atmospheres of Mars and Venus, taking account of energy sources and heat transfer. A number of upper atmospheric models are considered including a model of the thermal regime and the dynamics of the thermosphere, a model of atmospheric composition, an ionospheric model, a model for the exosphere and gas escape from the atmosphere, and a model for the effect of the solar wind on the atmosphere.
