The Leicester X-ray crystal spectrometer aboard Ariel V is described and
details of several early observations are given. The supernova remnants
Cas A and Tycho, as well as Sco X-I, have been examined for lines of Si
and Fe. The upper limits to narrow-line emission are compared with line
strengths inferred from proportional-counter data.
