Type Ia supernovae are believed to be thermonuclear explosions of carbon-oxygen white dwarf stars. Observationally they show a wide range of light curve shapes and peak luminosities at optical wavelengths. I discuss how type Ia supernova characteristics correlate with galaxy properties such as morphology, metallicity and star-formation rate. Also, I explore host properties at high and low redshift.
