Chemically peculiar A and B stars (hereafter referred to as Ap stars) have global, large-scale organised magnetic fields with, in most cases, a quasi-dipolar structure. These fields do not show any intrinsic variability on timescales of several decades. However, since they are not symmetric about an axis passing through the centre of the star, variations are observed with the stellar rotation period, due to the changing aspect of the visible stellar hemispheres. The observed properties of the Ap star magnetic fields will be reviewed, with emphasis on those relevant for the understanding of their origin, and of their effect on the evolution of the considered stars. Particular attention will be paid to the slow rotation of these stars. Their relevance for the general understanding of stellar magnetism and activity will be discussed.
