There is now strong evidence that the magnetic fields in white dwarfs and their main sequence progenitors are fossil fields from a pre-main sequence phase of evolution. In a recent paper, we explored the possibility of a fossil origin also for the magnetic fields in the isolated radio pulsars and the magnetars. In particular, we showed that the magnetic field distributions in both these groups could be explained with the simple assumption that the magnetic flux on the main sequence was distributed as a Gaussian in the logarithm with a mean value that is dependent on the progenitor mass following a physically realistic, but simple model. On this model, the magnetars originated preferentially from the high mass progenitors. In this talk, we show the results of new calculations of the low magnetic flux tail of the same flux distribution and calculate the expected number of isolated millisecond pulsars from single star evolution. We draw conclusions on the proportion of such stars that may be present in the observed millisecond pulsar population when allowance is made for selection effects.
