Theories put forward to explain the formation of a meteor stream from the dust debris emitted by an icy conglomerate cometary nucleus as it decays near perihelion are reviewed. These theories are then applied, using the orbital parameters of the comets responsible for the Quadrantids, Perseids and Geminids, to predict the form of the meteor streams produced and the way in which the parameters of the streams should vary with time and meteoroid mass. Recent measurements of the width of meteor streams, mass of dust in streams, across stream flux profiles, radiant distributions and annual flux variations are used to test the veracity of the above theories.
