We study the development of shock waves from the interaction between a fast expanding CME and a helmet streamer. We perform MHD simulations for nonlinear magnetosonic waves (longitudinal waves propagating perpendicularly to the magnetic field lines) in the streamer that are triggered by the CME. If the trigger is strong enough, the wave will steepen and evetually become a shock. We first confirm the theoretical solution of Lee, Kim, & Lysak (2000, JGR, 105, 23345) for the evolution of nonlinear magnetosonic waves in the homogeneous media. We then extend our study to the magnetosonic waves in an inhomogeneous plasma and investigate the development of shock waves in the streamer.
