Using DE 2 satellite data this study investigates the position of the ionospheric trough minimum. Two empirical models are developed which summarize a fairly large data sample, refer exclusively to the F-region trough, include the positions of both the mid-latitude and the high-latitude troughs, cover all local times, and use an optimized description of the magnetic activity.
