The amount of magnetic flux in the quiet Sun, its distribution on the
solar surface, its origin and evolution are topics that have been
strongly debated in recent years. Here a critical overview will be given
of some of the results obtained from high-sensitivity polarimetric data
and from numerical 3-D radiation-MHD simulations.
