The large-scale branching of spiral arms observed in some galaxies is explained in terms of density-wave theory. It is shown that solutions to the dispersion equation of spiral density waves relative to wave number for galaxy models in the form of two disks rotating with different angular velocities under specific conditions are branching functions of galactocentric distance, with corresponds to branching of spiral arms. Hydrodynamic as well as kinetic approaches are used. The latter enables a number of other structural features of spiral galaxies to be understood.
