A review of tropical airglow emission studies is presented. Studies of the oxygen tropical airglow demonstrated the ability to deduce F-region winds from the observed emissions. Large scale images of selected emissions from radiative and dissociative recombination processes offer the prospect of routine monitoring of ionospheric dynamic effects, such as horizontal winds and vertical drifts. Weak emission from hydrogen, helium, and oxygen in the tropical airglow was shown to be related to neutralized precipitating ring current particles. It is noted that remote sensing would be a good way to avoid the contaminating influences of particulate precipitation and allow studies of magnetic storm behavior. The only metallic ion which was observed systematically in the tropical airglow was Mg(+). With modern sensitive instruments it should be possible to observe Ca(+) and Fe(+) in the blue or UV spectral ranges.
