X-ray results on the galactic-center region are examined which were obtained with the rotation-modulation-collimator experiment on Ariel 5 and with a rocketborne coded-mask telescope. The X-ray sources detected are identified, and observations of X-ray bursts from the galactic-center region are discussed. The results show that there are at least six distinct X-ray sources (of which five are known to be variable) and at least six sources of X-ray bursts within 2 deg of arc of the galactic center and that two transient sources have also been observed. It is concluded that the galactic-center region appears to be characterized by continous irregular activity of a number of previously unresolved X-ray sources.
