An interpretation of the formulation of the metric tensor of the background Riemannian space of the nonsymmetric unified field theory of Einstein and Straus (1946) which leads to a cosmological model obtained without appeal to an independent cosmological principle is proposed. The interpretation avoids a cut-off of the skew part of the metric tensor, which is related to the electromagnetic field, at the distance where the solution of the metric tensor becomes singular by assuming the singularity distance to be equal to the radius of the universe. The proposed cosmological model is considered similar to the de Sitter model, however it does not require a cosmological constant and is not empty. It is also noted that empirical confirmation of the theory does not rest exclusively on the viability of the universe described by the metric.
