Observations of electron cyclotron harmonic waves at the geomagnetic equator at 6.6 earth radii are presented and discussed in relation to simultaneously observed low energy electron distributions. Four main classes of electron cyclotron harmonic emissions were detected by GEOS 2 at various times of the day and at various frequencies. The emissions observed for a long period after 01.00 UT, when cold plasma density rises and with a dominant frequency of up to 25 kHz, are found to be associated with narrow pitch angle distributions of electrons in the hundreds of eV range. It is suggested that these distributions are a remnant of the scattering of resonant electrons with small pitch angles during the amplification of electron cyclotron harmonic waves.
