A population of electrons over 50 eV which are confined to pitch angles near 90 deg (a 'pancake' distribution) has been regularly detected at the plasma trough by the suprathermal plasma analyzers on GEOS 2. Energy spectra taken at different pitch angles reveal an electron anisotropy between 100 and 500 eV. The pancake population is usually observed during the morning hours near the geomagnetic equator. It is found that a high degree of pitch angle anisotropy combined with an absence of dense cold plasma generally corresponds to the detection of strong electron cyclotron harmonic emissions, indicating wave-particle interactions as the source of the pancake distributions.
