A line shape is obtained for pressure broadened molecular lines at low pressures. The line has the Lorentz shape near resonance but an exponential dependence on frequency in the far wings where the frequency deviation from resonance is greater than the inverse of tau2 (tau2 is a measure of the duration of the collision and is related to the mean-squared torque produced in bimolecular collision). The theory is applied to the absorption in the high-frequency far wing of the 4.3-micron band in CO2.
