We discuss, in the context of inflationary universe models, the transition from the quantum mechanical description of the scalar field to the purely classical description. It is shown that under certain conditions, the wave function for the scalar field modes becomes peaked about a set of classical trajectories in configuration space. The wave function also provides a conserved probability measure on this set of trajectories. It is thus shown that the distribution of the classical Φ2 is strongly peaked when it is equal to the expectation value of its quantum mechanical counterpart.
