The unique Chinese "candle star" reported in 76 BC was previously
suggested to be a comet or a nova. Some even interpret it as the most
brilliant of the known historical novae. However, an extensive study of
ancient literature shows that a fireball with its trajectory parallel to
the line of sight may be the most plausible explanation for the event.
