It is shown that the classical formulation of the distance bias problem by Malmquist does not apply to methods of determining galaxy distances such as the Tully-Fisher relationship, the Faber-Jackson relationship, and the de Vaucouleurs Λc index. A more appropriate formulation shows that at large distances the derived moduli will tend to be over-estimates, contrary to the results of the classical Malmquist formulation.
