An analysis of experimental data indicates that the size of the galactic-cosmic-ray modulation region in circumsolar space varies over the course of the 11-year cycle; this variation ranges from 16 to 35 AU in the ecliptic plane. It is found that shock waves formed beyond the earth orbit can play an important role in the size variations of the modulation region.
