Observational constraints on reheating of the universe between redshift z = 1000 and z = 5 are investigated. Evolution equations are solved for the thermal history of the universe with monoenergetic photons of specified energy density injected at a specific epoch. An emphasis is given to the resulting spectral distortion of the cosmic microwave background and astrophysical effects caused by the residual UV flux. We show that reheating, while it provides a number of attractive features, receives strong constraints from various observations.
