This study attempts to explain the local time variation of ionospheric storms at middle latitudes using a model which is based on a close coupling between thermospheric and ionospheric disturbance effects. Daytime positive storms are attributed to traveling atmospheric-ionospheric disturbances and subsequent changes in the global wind circulation. Negative storm effects are attributed to neutral gas composition changes which are advected toward middle latitudes during night and which subsequently rotate into the day sector. This disturbance scenario is supported by the results of a data analysis.
