Scientific paper

Starbursts are an energetically significant component of the universe and the sites for at least 25% of the high-mass star-formation in the local universe. They offer unique laboratories for testing our ideas about star-formation, the evolution of massive stars, and the physics of the interstellar medium. They may also serve as local analogs of the processes that were important for the formation and early evolution of galaxies and the heating and chemical enrichment of the inter-galactic medium. In this talk I review starbursts from this cosmogonical perspective, and attempt to relate starbursts to some of the key issues addressed during this conference.
