The absorption coefficient α of olivine crystals was measured in the range of wavelength from 0.3 μ-10 μ at various temperatures up to 1300 °K. It was discovered that α in the pass-band (about 1.8 μ-3.0 μ) increases by a factor of about 100 in going from 300 °K to 1300 °K. The radiative thermal conductivity calculated from this result is in a good agreement with the radiative component of the thermal conductivity estimated from the actual measurement of thermal diffusivity on olivine crystals.
