The Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility (HRIBF) at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory began operation in early 1997 providing accelerated radioactive ion beams (RIBs) for research in nuclear structure physics and nuclear astrophysics. The HRIBF incorporates two previously existing ORNL accelerators with a newly constructed RIB injector system (high voltage production target and ion source platform together with two stages of mass separation) into a coupled system for the production and acceleration of radioactive ions. The facility is based on the isotope separator on-line (ISOL) method using the k=100 Oak Ridge Isochronous Cyclotron (ORIC) to provide intense light-ion (p, d, ^3,4He) beams for production of radioactive species and the 25 MV ORNL Tandem to accelerate the RIBs to energies required for nuclear physics research. The key to the technical success of the HRIBF lies in the development of a variety of physically interesting beams, and consequently in the development of appropriate production target systems coupled to efficient ion sources. The characteristics and capabilities of the beam production and delivery systems, along with our beam development and target and ion source development programs will be discussed. Facilities for the demanding and difficult research to be done with RIBs must be an important part of any RIB facility. At HRIBF we have assembled two large endsdstations which are the centerpieces around which our nuclear structure physics and nuclear astrophysics programs are being built. The new ORNL Recoil Mass Spectrometer is the focal point of the nuclear structure program, while the recoil separator obtained from the Daresbury facility in the U.K. is being refurbished and upgraded to form the basis of the nuclear astrophysics facility. HRIBF is a first generation accelerated RIB facility with unique features and capabilities which make it an important tool for the research community.
