The author demonstrates that by relinquishing the hydrostatic
approximation it is possible to define, on the basis of motion equations
with arbitrary initial stresses, the principal nonhydrostatic component
of the stresses of the Earth, which is taken into account by the
"contraction hypothesis" but overlooked by "plate tectonics".
