At present, different approaches are discussed to explain the unusually weak magnetic field of planet Mercury. One possible scenario is a dynamo process which experiences a magnetospheric feedback that arises from the interaction of planetary magnetic field with the impinging solar wind. At the core-mantle boundary, the magnetic field of the magnetopause currents is always directed antiparallel to the internal dipole. Thus, this external field provides a negative feedback and must be taken into account in the solution of the dynamo problem. We examine how the boundary region within the liquid core close to the core-mantle boundary is physically altered, thus changing the dynamo solution. Due to the small magnetopause distance a relatively strong effect is expected. We investigate the magnetospheric contribution using a solar wind hybrid simulation, enabling us to construct a parameterized, first order approximative response function which describes the external field dependent on the internal dipole field strength. We also address the special situation of a particularly weak internal magnetic dipole when the planetary surface disturbes the magnetopause. On the basis of the aforementioned work and of preliminary studies with a kinematic dynamo model, self-consistent dynamo simulations are being developed.
