A description of the Freja double probe electric field instrument and its capabilities to perform detailed high resolution measurements of the aurora and the auroral fine structure in the dynamic transition region between the upper ionosphere and the innermost magnetosphere is given. The in situ electric field measurements, supplemented by magnetic field and particle observations, will provide fundamental information not only on the acceleration mechanisms itself, but also on the formation, energy transfer, and current closure mechanisms of the different auroral structures. The highly structured and intense electric fields observed by Viking on auroral flux tubes at high altitudes (and occasionally by rockets down to the uppermost ionosphere) include low frequency electric field fluctuations (causing a selective acceleration of ions and electrons), weak double layers, and shock-like electric fields at various scale sizes ranging down to the minimum scale size of auroral arcs (less than 100 m). The Freja electric field instrument developed to investigate these small scale phenomena is a highly flexible instrument with a number of different operational modes. It is also equipped with a 4 Megabyte burst memory for high data sampling rate (6144 samples/s) and for temporary data storage.
