The scientific objectives, the Strawman science payload, and the command and data handling operations of Auroral Cluster, a space physics mission that has been identified by the NASA Space Physics Strategic Implementation Study as a candidate for flight in the next decade, are addressed together with details of the spacecraft and its orbit. The Strawman payload consists of a set of sensors that will measure electric and magnetic fields, plasmas, and auroral particles. As presently conceived, the year long mission will employ a cluster of four 'electronically tethered' spacecraft outfitted with similar complements of scientific instruments to make simultaneous multipoint plasma measurements in the Earth's auroral regions. The strategy of correlative, multipoint measurements in situ will make it possible for the first time to resolve spatially and temporally varying plasma phenomena that play a key role in the coupling of the magnetosphere and the ionosphere.
