The physical conditions in the substorm relevant parts of the magnetotail are considered. The current understanding of reconnection in the collisionless tail plasma is surveyed. These conditions are compared with the tail observations, separately for thin current sheets, typical for the near Earth tail, for thick sheets, as observed in the mid-tail prior to substorms, and for the distant tail. The results are summarized.
