The development of a physical model of the magnetic field reconnection at the dayside magnetosphere is addressed. A mathematical model is also presented, and a comparison with observations is made. Magnetic field reconnection is a fundamental energy conversion process, and the energy liberated during this process gives rise to phenomena which can be observed in space and laboratory plasmas. At the dayside, magnetopause reconnection results in a coupling between the solar wind and the magnetosphere. Manifestations of this include large disturbances in the magnetic field, known as flux transfer events, and accelerated plasma flow along the magnetopause.
