Studies of the spectral features of the Jovian satellite Io have revealed the existence of a huge cloud of ionized sodium around the satellite. Possible explanations for the observations are considered, taking into account questions regarding the origin of the sodium and the excitation mechanism involved. The stability of the cloud implies a remarkably steady source of sodium, since the mean lifetime of neutral sodium there is shorter than 16 days.
