Stratospheric emission spectra were observed in May 1972 aboard a Caravelle in the frequency range from 30 to 250 per cm. Oxygen lines up to 200 per cm have been identified in these spectra and compared with lines theoretically predicted and lines detected previously by other authors up to 115.7 per cm. Using a method suggested by Burroughs and Harries (1970) measurements were made of the mixing ratio of water vapor to air from these spectra. The values that were found are in good agreement with those found by different authors in past years at aircraft and balloon altitudes. In addition to this, an unexpected behavior is seen when pairs of lines of high frequency are used. The values of the above-mentioned mixing ratio change in time, corresponding to the passage of the aircraft through stratospheric regions where different physical conditions exist.
