The MHD stability of force-free, cylindrical arcades is investigated, including the stabilising effect of photospheric line tying. It is found that a wide variety of fields are stable. This suggests that either a departure from a force free equilibrium or suppression of line tying is necessary if a two-ribbon flare is to be triggered. It is postulated that in both circumstances, the existence of an active region filament is an essential preflare requirement for a two-ribbon flare.
