The topological relationship between the distribution of polarity neutral lines on the solar surface and the embedding of magnetic cells of closed field lines amid open field lines is investigated. It is suggested that polarity neutral lines on the solar surface are spatially nested in a series-and-parallel hierarchy, and that the corona is characterized by a corresponding hierarchy of nested three-dimensional magnetic cells. It is shown that polarity neutral lines must lie on the foot surfaces of magnetic cells that are filled with closed field lines, and the results indicate that there are fewer heliospheric current sheets, as revealed by magnetic neutral lines on the source surface, in interplanetary space than polarity neutral lines on the solar surface.
