Variables related to the Cephei stars and symbiotic classes, which
appear to be cool giants losing mass to a hot evolutive star are
reviewed. The variability of the brighter supergiants in the Magellanic
Clouds, together with carbon stars and long period Cepheids, are also
discussed.
