Interstellar matter, both neutral and ionized, was studied in several large northern galaxies. Studies of galactic structure and of physics of interstellar matter, especially the high resolution profiles of optical interstellar lines, are needed for the Southern Hemisphere. They clearly require the use of large telescopes with sophisticated spectrographic equipment.
