Isolated black holes accreting interstellar gas can account for the
salient properties of the BL Lac-type objects. The observed frequency
spectra in the visible and infrared, the rapid variations in intensity
and polarisation, and the absence of discrete features in the optical
spectra are all consequences of the adopted black hole accretion model.
