We describe, with reference to the ROSAT Wide Field Camera detector development programme, a novel method of measuring the spatial resolution of microchannel plate (MCP) X-ray detectors - the method of wire shadows. The construction, as part of the AXAF High Resolution Camera Phase B study, of a laboratory detector incorporating 10 × 10 cm2 MCPs is outlined.
