Recent gains made in understanding the inner structure of the sun through the use of helioseismology are reviewed. The remeasurement of two coefficients that describe the acoustical properties of the sun which depend on its departure from spherical symmetry is discussed. The origin of the acoustical asphericity and its relation to the magnetic cycle is addressed. The effects of asphericity on solar luminosity and on solar oscillations are considered.
