An analysis of the impulsive phases of three flares observed on April 10, May 21, and November 5, 1980 reveals hard X-ray brightenings at 16 to 30 keV and widely separated locations that spatially coincide with bright H-alpha patches. The bulk of the 3.5-5.5 keV soft X-ray emission originates from the regions between the hard X-ray brightenings, and these hard X-ray regions are located at different sides of the neutral line, coinciding with the footpoints of loops. The hard X-ray emission from these footpoints is probably thick target emission from fast electrons moving downward into the dense chromosphere. It is also found that the total flare energy is always larger than the total energy residing in the beam electrons, although at the time of the impulsive hard X-ray emission peak a large fraction of the dissipated flare power must also go into electron acceleration.
