A study was made of the time development for 31 simple sunspots. The growth and decay rates varied between spots, but were approximately constant during the lifetime of individual, relatively short-lived spots. Long-lived spots showed oscillations in umbral size, with periods of three to five days. Occasionally, rapid changes in the spot size were observed.
